Colouring for Calm
Following the theme You’re Not Alone, the student-led design team Art Murmurs, created a series of intricate illustrations that were digitised into a Colouring Book to be available to students when they’re feeling overwhelmed or “a bit lost”. The first page of the book also explains the positive effects colouring can have on our wellbeing, for example, it reduces our mental chatter enabling us to feel more present and find clarity. Each teacher will be given a copy of the Colouring Book and sent a digital version to use as they wish and several copies will be kept in the Counsellors’ Rooms. |
ART MURMURS- Student Led Design Company
From an initial small group of students wanting to improve their digital design skills, "Art Murmurs" grew into a hugely popular student- led ECA and CAS activity. From Sketchbook covers for a residential to T-shirt designs for a self-defense ECA, the student designers tackle a wide range of assignments from international, local and personal briefs. The design experts taught and supported any newbies in the team and our Art Ambassadors sought out challenging and worthwhile projects. The team researches groups, projects or competitions that actively promote service to others. The design company demonstrates to students how we can use our skills to "give" and help others. Quite literally providing a service without the obligatory or expected financial gain. |
Zero Waste- Art Meets Science
Year 9 students were presented with a live design brief- to create a sculptural outcome that informs or raises awareness about one of the UN Sustainability goals that correspond to our new College Sustainability Goals. Faced with a number of constraints, everyone quickly became enthused and focused. To ensure the sculptures were structurally sound, aesthetically striking and supported by sound theory, the project was completed during both Art and Science lessons. Working in teams, students assigned themselves into roles of responsibility to not only complete the task, but to excel.
Zero Waste pioneer Bea Johnson, visited the exhibition and was overwhelmed by the quality of the students' vision and enthusiasm for sustainability.

"Well-being" in Art + Design
It is of course obvious that the practice of Art techniques and the process of artistic expression has very blatant links to one's well-being and mental health, however it can be quite difficult to capture or evidence this in words. Within the schemes of work, I make reference to explicit well-being links, but I felt the best way to capture the affect of Art Education on a student's well-being was to ask some of my older students to explain it. The video produced says everything... |

UN Sustainable Goals in the Curriculum
When relevant, art projects can be given a Service brief which can be made more relevant and focused through the use of the UN sustainable goals. These UN goals feature throughout the art projects from Year 7 through to IGCSE and IB. Students not only become familiar with the goals but also start to realise that we can have an impact on global issues if we think differently about the work we do and work collaboratively. |
A brief overview of the Service links in the curriculum are outlined in this powerpoint...
