The ‘Artivist,’ Damian Siqueiros

The IB Visual Artists were left astounded and exhausted last week after a two-day workshop with globally renowned photographer, Damian Siqueiros. The students from Years 12 and 13 soon realised that Damian is so much more than his camera. Working as both an artist and activist (hence ‘Artivist’), Damian tackles contemporary global issues regarding gender equality and environmentalism.  After absorbing huge amounts of theory and contextualisation, every student planned and prepared for a full shoot; visualising their own concepts, directing a team and continually reacting to reflections or critiques. With themes including the fragility of our eco system and societal pressure on mental health, Damian was impressed with the students’ maturity and confidence in vocalising their thoughts and concerns. He also commented that for him, it was the students’ energy, compassion and warmth that made the visit such a success. Whilst time was allocated at the end of the workshop for digital enhancements, the photographs were so successful that manipulations were simply not needed. An unforgettable experience for everyone.
